ALDE & ORE

TWO RIVERS RISE
Beginning its journey to the sea in mid Suffolk, the Ore rises west of the pretty Suffolk village of Dennington before meandering through hilly fields and charming villages and towns including Framlingham, Parham and Marlesford towards Blaxhall.  
The Alde, little more than a stream at this stage, rises close to Laxfield, not far from the source of the River Blyth, before trickling eastward through gently undulating landscape past the villages of Badingham, Bruisyard, Rendham and Sweffling and passing under the A12 at Farnham. Close to Blaxhall the Alde and Ore become one river, here known as the Alde. Both tributaries make the perfect backdrop for a relaxing walk, but at times these tiny streams break their banks creating local flooding.


TRACES OF THE PAST
Evidence of industry can still be seen along the river and estuary including remains of Roman salt workings, and a Saxon settlement. But the course of the river has altered significantly over the centuries due to flooding and man’s intervention.  
 
SNAPE, IKEN AND THE RETURN OF THE ORE
The river moves downhill becoming tidal close to the Snape Maltings Concert Hall.  The surrounding flatlands are frequently flooded and need constant intervention to protect nearby properties.  
For a short distance the river was channelled, originally to allow malt and barley to be loaded onto barges for transport to the coast; today only a few red-sailed Thames Barges remain used for leisure rather than commerce. Passing St Botolph’s church at Iken the Alde widens to become a tidal estuary, its salt marsh home to many overwintering birds.  From here on it winds its way towards Aldeburgh and Slaughden. Joined by the Butley Creek beyond Aldeburgh, close to Havergate Island, it becomes known as the Ore once more, possibly as a result of the commercial rivalry between Aldeburgh and Orford which were, into Tudor times, both thriving ports and building ships to fight the Spanish Armada. 


GUARDING THE COAST
Militarily the coastline was protected by the iconic Orford Castle, a series of Martello towers and in the last century, pill boxes and radar, the latter developed at nearby Bawdsey and on Orford Ness.


ORFORD NESS AND A SHIFTING ESTUARY
The estuary is in a constant state of flux, the sand and stone moved by tide and wind.  Fresh and salt marshes abound providing a series of unique habitats for an unusually rich selection of biodiversity. The growth of the 16km narrow shingle spit running south from Aldeburgh, Orford Ness, resulted in the demise of Orford as a seaport, moved the estuary’s entrance to the sea to the tiny hamlet of Shingle Street and created a unique habitat for a rich and rare selection of biodiversity including several rare species of flora. 


LIVING WITH THE SEA
The threat from the sea is a major cause of concern for human inhabitants and the unique biodiversity of the area and managed retreat is likely to be part of the response along parts of the coastline.  However, management of the river and its riparian zone can do much to maintain water quality, minimise flooding and provide essential habitats for biodiversity along the length of the river. 


A COMMUNITY VISION FOR THE ALDE AND ORE
In early 2026, the 4 Rivers Restoration Project – led by the Deben Climate Centre and funded by East Suffolk Council – brought the community together to assess the Alde and Ore's health, threats and opportunities, and to generate and rank practical initiatives. The community's own vision, agreed during the process, is for a clean, free-flowing and ecologically thriving river in which water quality and pollution reduction are the top priority, resilient to both flooding and drought, rich in biodiversity, shaded by woodland, and safeguarded for future generations through sustainable community stewardship.


THE HEALTH OF THE RIVER
Stakeholders and the community dismissed the Environment Agency's published 2019/2021 ecological ratings – 'moderate' for the Alde, 'poor' for the Ore – as out of date. Their own assessment describes a catchment under pressure from multiple directions at once: poor climate resilience, moderate to poor water quality, and ecological health ranging from good to poor across different stretches. Sewage infrastructure, flood risk, and bureaucratic barriers to estuary defence repair emerged as the most critical concerns, compounded by the wider policy and energy-development landscape, including Sizewell C and several concurrent energy projects in the area.

  • Flood risk was identified as significant across the catchment, with poor resilience specifically flagged at Orford, Friston, Snape, Kelsale, Framlingham, Saxmundham, Parham, Hacheston, Great Glemham and Marlesford, alongside drought and low-flow conditions in summer – the dual pressure of too much water in winter and too little in summer.

  • Water quality concerns centre on pesticide pollution in river groundwater, sewage pollution on the Ore and the Fromus (at Benhall), E. coli contamination, and pollution linked to Framlingham's sewage treatment works, with nitrate and micropollutants also flagged and housing development adding further pressure on sewage systems.

  • The Alde and Ore Association has run weekly water quality testing since October 2022 across 13 tidal and non-tidal locations up to Benhall Marshes, tracking E. coli, nitrates and phosphates, and monitoring the impact of sewage treatment upgrades coming online at Benhall, Framlingham and Orford. 

 
COMMUNITY PRIORITIES
The community’s priorities were split between building a reliable evidence base – networking the catchment's separate water-testing groups, standardising citizen science reporting, a shared communications database, public education and myth-busting (particularly around dredging versus slowing the flow) – and two specific natural flood management projects, upstream of Framlingham and Parham and on the Fromus at Dorleys Corner, to reduce storm flows into Saxmundham. A second tier covered flood risk reduction through habitat restoration, a proposed new sewage treatment plant at Benhall Marsh, and securing long-term maintenance funding, while harder-to-achieve but high-impact initiatives included river profile work, changing soil management practice, and reconnecting floodplains.
